Secret Life

Emily Whites, High School's Secret Life excerpt was realistic and mind opening. The way she discribes her surroundings are well developed using discriptive adjatives. For example, "The smell of the heat-lamp food, the over head fluorescent lights, the lunch ladies in their hair nets".  I also agree with alot of concepts White was presenting like when she said the cafeteria is the place where you find out if you have friends or if you dont. This was mind opening to me because it brought me back to high school and had me picturing how I felt walking into the cafeteria searching the room to see if I knew anyone, feeling nervous or excited depending on who I saw. This statement is true because if you have friends you should be able to find atleast one person you are friendly with no matter what lunch you are in. However, i do dissagree with Whites comment, "the luckiest kids have third lunch, the "fun" lunch." When I was in high school everyone wanted to have the first lunch. Waiting for last lunch was like waiting for paint to dry. It was torturous seeing everyone in school get a break from class to go see their friends and get to eat food. Last lunch was certaintly one of the most dissapointing things to see on your schedule. I also agreed and could relate to when White said that second lunch destiny changed her idea of herself as a girl with friends because now she wasnt getting involved in plans. I can relate to this because back when I was in highschool, if i had a lunch with not many friends i would leave the caffeteria feeling depressed and unfocused. However, if I had a lunch with alot of my friends I would leave the caffeteria feeling energized with a smile on my face. After reading this excerpt the last statement made me laugh. White said, "This is what it means to be part of a crowd: to always have people jammed next to you on the cafeteria bench." I felt that White was making fun of the "popular" kids from this school which i found humerous. This piece was well constucted, it kept my attention because i could relate to the segment. It was as if i was reading a story. The piece was also well developed because White had good supporting evidence such as the way she described each clique.
